Thesis margins, fonts and line spacing

No single set of margins and fonts fits every thesis. A faculty may specify custom paper dimensions and different fonts for covers, body text or languages. Applying popular internet settings before reading the guide can change pagination and push tables outside the writing area.

Paper size is not writing area

Distinguish the physical sheet dimensions from the permitted text area. A writing-area measurement does not establish how margins are distributed. Do not label a custom size as B5 merely because it is close. Enter dimensions supported by the guide. If instructions conflict, record the conflict and seek clarification rather than guessing.

Inner margins and binding

Check whether binding allowance is required, on which side, and how reading direction and printing affect it. A top-margin measurement is not evidence of a binding gutter, and a fixed gutter is not universal. Margin changes affect table width, so inspect tables after applying settings, saving and exporting.

Match fonts and spacing to each element

Review font family and size for body text, headings, footnotes, references and captions in each language. An unavailable font should not be silently substituted. Line spacing differs from paragraph space before and after; all can alter pagination. Check Arabic and English paragraphs and, where applicable, a table and an equation.

Pre-submission checklist

  • Confirm physical paper dimensions.
  • Separate text area and margin requirements.
  • Use explicit binding instructions.
  • Check font availability and substitutions.
  • Review pagination after spacing changes.

Common questions

Are all theses A4 with 2.5 cm margins?
